The 2014 World cup is up and running!

Hosts Brazil played Croatia in front of  a partisan crowd of 62,103 in the Arena de Sao Paulo.

A rousing second verse of the Brazilian national anthem was evidence enough that the hosts were fully pumped up for the occasion.  The hosts looked like they were trying too hard and it was Croatia who scored first. Dani Alves was caught out of position and Olic  found space wide on the left.  He delivered a low searching cross which took a touch off of Jelavic.  Marcelo covering behind was caught off balance and watched hopelessly as the ball deflected onto his ankle and into Julio Cesar's net.

Not the start the watching Brazilian public would have wanted.  An air of nervousness and disbelief swept the stadium.  Then cometh the hour cometh the man..  Lucky to be on the pitch after receiving a booking for a swinging forearm to the face of Luka Modric, Neymar struck.  Chelsea's Oscar evaded two challenges to find the striker.  Shifting the ball to his left foot he appeared to scuff his shot from 25 yards.  Somehow though it found it's way accurately passed Pletikosa and glanced off of the post on the way in.

On 71 minutes Dejan Lovren appeared to pull back Fred.  A second look showed that the award of  spot kick by the Japanese referee was harsh to say the least.  Neymar shuffled up and dispatched the penalty passed the Croatian keeper.  2-1 Brazil.   Man of the match Oscar put the result beyond doubt with a strong run and 25 yard toe poke past the helpless Pletikosa in the last minute.

Despite not playing to their usual Samba rhythm Brazil will be the ones to beat.
